SHADOWHUNTERS
A review of all of the Shadowhunter Books (Series + Companions) plus suggested reading orders!
The Mortal Instruments 4/5
** The last time that I read this series, it was the first time reading any Shadowhunter books. I had just watched the show and was unbelievably in love with it. I had originally rated every book 5/5 but am adjusting it to 4/5 after reflecting on it more. I plan on doing a reread where I take more time with each book (I think I read the complete series in 2 weeks) to give a better review and also watch the show simultaneously to analyze how similar it was.
**All in all, I loved it. I think it is a fantastic young adult fantasy series. There is action, romance, mystery and while reading it, I wanted to be in this world. My desire to want to live in a book is one of my biggest signifiers if it was good.
City of Bones
City of Ashes
City of Glass
City of Fallen Angels
City of Lost Souls
City of Heavenly Fire
The Infernal Devices 5/5
**Again, I am currently rating this series as a whole before my reread to have specific thoughts per book. While I generally hate historical/period books - this is my favorite trilogy. It took a bit for me to get into it due to not liking period books but heard so many great things about it, I knew I needed to push through. Boy, am I glad that I did! This love triangle, having easter eggs to TMI, plot, all of it. I love how we learn how things from TMI got put into place.
Clockwork Angel
Clockwork Prince
Clockwork Princess
Dark Artifices 4/5
**I struggled to get into this series. The writing style is much different. But learning what life was like after TMI was nice to read about. I love that even though this series focuses on Emma and Julian (who we meet in TMI) we still get cameo appearances from Clary, Jace, Alec, Magnus and more. We really see connections from both previous series - Cassandra has really woven a wonderful story and built a well rounded world.
Lady Midnight
Lord of Shadows
Queen of Air and Darkness
Companion Books
**While these are needed, they make the story just so much better. They add so much to the story, help explain things deeper that are mentioned in the main books. They also explore other parts of the Shadow world that Claire briefly touches on in the books but you can tell there is so much more to the concept. My favorite is definitely Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy but I love them all. There is no specific order to read these in but there is a helpful order to understand everything the best!
Ghosts of the Shadow Market
Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy
The Bane Chronicles
Secrets of Blackthorn Hall
Suggested Reading Orders
There are 2 ways to read the Shadowhunter books - by publication and by timeline. Both are great ways to read them. Once Chain of Thorns is out - I highly suggest reading it Timeline order! In Timeline order, you can read all of the trilogies in complete sets whereas in publication, TMI gets split in half.
