Criminal Minds: Evolution - Episode 7
Wow, they weren't kidding when they said this season was going to more adult. The swearing, the scare factor, the explicitness, that end credit scene? Wow.
The episode wasn't as bad as last week but not the best episode. These recent episodes have been quite cheesy which doesn't feel on brand for classic Criminal Minds. This episode was another one directed by a principal cast member - which is can be an iffy situation but Aisha did a great job.
One of my qualms from last week continued on to this week - WHERE THE HECK IS LUKE? We saw him significantly more in the first couple of episodes to convince Penelope to come back to the FBI to help with the investigation, then next to nothing. I really hope we start seeing him more because at this point, we see Will more often than Luke.
Moving on, it was an interesting twist to have a "filler" episode so soon to the end of the season. The fact that the Attorney General was questioning them and ended up denying their request to continue was a good plot point and pretty on brand for how the rest of the government tends to treat the BAU. It was a great case though, this is what made it classic Criminal Minds to me. I do love when seeing them solve these.
Deputy Director Bailey got some nice character development in this episode. I appreciate that while the story line is similar to one previously in Criminal Minds, this time it is going differently. We see him start to get an understanding of the life of an agent.
There was a lot of mention of agents dating each other in this episode which of course was mainly about Penelope and Tyler so the Sicarius case doesn't fall apart, but there was definitely something between Prentiss and Bailey too. We have 2 classic tropes and I am here for it! Do you prefer enemies to lovers or grump/sunshine?
Now, regarding Sicarius. Man is devolving and fast. His fantasies and realities are starting to mesh. He can't keep the things he wants to do/say just in his head anymore. Even though I keep thinking this is the start of him devolving, this time I think it is really true. Especially now that he yelled at his family like that when he thought he just did it in his head. But, with Penelope and Tyler being together, will he ever get caught? Or since they couldn't stay away, will it be the downfall of the case?
Director: Aisha Tyler
Writer: Jeff Davis, Sullivan Fitzgerald
Favorite moment: Bailey and Prentis right before their meeting with the attorney general
